Alfa Framtak Enters Land-Based Aquaculture with Investments in Samherji Fish Farming and NP Innovation
Reykjavík, Iceland – Alfa Framtak, a leading private equity firm in Iceland, today announced two investments from its latest fund, AF3 slhf., marking its entry into the land-based aquaculture sector — a rapidly growing global industry with significant growth potential.
AF3 has invested in Samherji fiskeldi, a subsidiary of Samherji hf., to support the development of “The Salmon Garden” — a new land-based salmon farming facility under construction in Reykjanes, Iceland. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 30,000 tonnes of salmon per year. The site will operate using 100% renewable energy and is expected to directly create 100 new jobs, alongside a similar number of indirect jobs.
To further underscore its commitment to the sector, AF3 has also invested in NP Innovation AB, a Sweden-based company specialising in water treatment solutions for aquaculture. Having delivered its solutions to clients globally, NP Innovation has developed a strong reputation for delivering cutting-edge, sustainable systems that support efficient fish farming operations worldwide. Alfa Framtak’s investment, made alongside Haf Investments, supports the company’s continued global growth and innovation.
“Land-based aquaculture is rapidly emerging as an important industry for Iceland‘s economy. As demand for sustainable seafood continues to rise globally and environmental pressures intensify, there is a clear need for scalable, clean, and efficient farming solutions. With these two investments, Alfa Framtak is proud to contribute to the development of a new-generation aquaculture ecosystem — one that combines global innovation with deep Icelandic expertise. This is the beginning of an exciting new journey for us, and we’re looking forward to working with great partners to help shape the future of aquaculture,” says Markús Árnason, Investment Director at Alfa Framtak.
